It's a fact when you restore a car, you will deal with some rust, rust is one of those things that can be very annoying if you don't know how to deal with it, in this article I will discuss two different products that our shop has used to help us deal with the rust.
The first one of these products is called rustmort, this is an acid based product that you spray on to the rust using a plastic spray bottle, the way this works is you'd sprat on the affected area, and wait for 24 hours, after the 24 hours is up then you'd simply spray some water on it to neutralize the acid, and presto done.
The rust turns black indicating that it's dead, before you use these products make 100% sure that you have cut out any area's that you have determined are rusty enough that need to be replaced, rustmort will not make the metal strong again, nothing can do that, short of replacing it.
After we've rustmorted the areas that need to have rust killed, we that apply a product called POR-15 , this is unless the part is getting a baked on coating, POR-15 is the ultimate paint product to battle rust with, POR15 will guarantee that that rust will not return, and you know that's what rust is famous for.
The name POR-15 simply means paint over rust, and as long as you have cleaned the surface you can quite literally do just that, we have never had rust return after using POR-15, not even one time, the first time I seen it I was still working for another shop, and a sales rep came in to show us the product.
The sales rep played us a movie, which was no doubt part of his sales kit, this movie showed product testing, and I have never seen a company that test their products the way that POR-15 does, this movie was about ½ hour long; it took POR-15 through a salt blast test that the company had done, and at this time I can't remember how many days the test went, but it had no affect on POR-15.
The next test would be a heat test, and POR-15 would also pass this test with flying colors, the POR-15 did not dull, flake, chip, or crack, it held up like a rock, and the last part of the movie was not so much a test of the product, as it was a way to prove it's toughness, and that it did.
Because next the testing people would stick the part in a sandblaster and show the fact that even a blaster can't remove the POR-15 when it's applied the right way, and this was the one part that my boss at the the time just had to prove wrong, so he Pored a piece of steel, and invited the salesman back to prove the video wrong.
Well needless to say the salesman showed up a couple of days later, and the boss threw that piece of Pored metal in the sandblaster, fired it up, and aimed the nozzle at the piece of metal, and Lowe and behold that sale move hadn't lied, the POR-15 held up to the test, I was sold at that moment.
